This paper writes on investigating the relationship between academic performance of students in basic science and mathematics and the hypotheses are that there is no significant relationship between the academic performance of basic science and mathematics students that sat for JSCE; there is no significant difference between the academic performance of male and female students in basic science JSCE; and there is no significant difference between the academic performance of male and female students in mathematics JSCE. The data used for this survey was gathered from Egba Comprehensive High School, Asero, Abeokuta South local Government Area in Ogun State. T-test was used to test the hypotheses. The results revealed that there is low correlation between mathematics and basic science, the difference between the academic performance of male and female students in basic science is not significant i.e. the hypothesis is accepted and the difference between the academic performance of male and female students in mathematics is significant i.e. the hypothesis is rejected. Some recommendations were made as way forward alleviating the problem such as both basic science and mathematics should be made as everyday life practice, students should develop positive attitude for both subjects. Seminars, symposia, and workshops should be organized for both students and teachers and governments should also provide standardized instructional materials for effective teaching and learning for both teachers and learners.
This study was designed to investigate the relationship between academic performance of basic science and mathematics in junior secondary certificate examination (JSCE) in Abeokuta south local government area; a case study of Egba Comprehensive High School, Asero, Abeokuta.
1.2 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Basic science study major is designed to meet a growing need for people whose knowledge of science is to be directed to its use, expression and administration and in both the private and public sectors. Students in major are expected not only to achieve specific competencies in the science but also to develop a critical understanding of the roles of science in the school, political and economic emphasis is placed on the breath and of the foundational science curriculum student secure specific but in a range of laboratory, ecology and environmental studies as well as mathematics (OGUNKOLA, 2000).
Basic science offers students the chance to look at science in a new way not following the traditional divisions into biology, chemistry and physics (OLAREWAJU, 1994).
As science as develop there are disciplines which fall between these old subjects such as biochemistry or biophysics and there are also important areas of science which are much better studied as a whole rather than looking narrowly at only the physical or chemical aspects. Examples are industrial science gives student and teachers an opportunity to look at the ways in which science is important to our societies and to their development. Basic science can be more relevant to develop issues, and should be tropical and useful rather than dry and academic. (OLARENWAJU, 1994)
A series of courses taken in the freshmen and sophomore years provides student’s rate preparation for a major in any of the core scientific disciplines, and in such a way that helps retains the connections to the other disciplines. The curriculum is founded on the expectation that much of the most important science of the future through based on the classical disciplines will lie-in areas that span two or more of them.
Basic science is the study biology anatomy chemistry earth or solar system, ecology, genetics and physics. These topics are integrated, showing how all curriculum students need an edge to facilitate achievement when facing subject of this magnitude. By using study methods that vary and by learning high school basic science definitions, students can excel even in the most demanding college prep science courses. High school basic science lesson plans include many varying and sometimes seemingly disconnected concepts through the use of high school basic science vocabulary drill and practice , student are brought to make this concrete real-life connection between advanced science words and the world around them.(MERVEL, 1974)
Mathematics has been acknowledged as a core subject in the whole of Africa. This much attention has been given to its teaching and process mathematics arose as a consequence of practical problems which man was determined to solve. Thus, it grew up with civilization and infects the very first of the sciences to develop mathematics as a core subject involves arithmetic and logical calculation and also makes use of sign such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division etc.
To live as a useful and effective member of this modern society every individual requires some knowledge of mathematics (ADETUNJI, 2001). For the purpose of commercial activities business transaction, domestic, activities, farming, politics and decision making every individual requires a certain amount of competence in basic mathematics. A little knowledge of mathematics will help a builder to design, take accurate measurement and identify shapes and solid (OLAORE, 2004).
Mathematics can therefore be defined as a field of study of size, numeration and the relation between them. It is that tool with which man known how much, how many, how large, and how fast, in what direction and with what changes. Mathematics can be defined as a quantitative manipulation of concepts, situation, ideals and discoveries (BELLO, 2002). Mathematics therefore has the following aims (ACCORDING TO THE NATIONAL POLICY ON EDUCATION FORTH EDITION 2002).
i. The need for studying mathematics in primary and secondary schools involve not only the science students but must involve non-science students as well studying the mathematics in primary school helps in solving problem in calculation e.g. Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division even mathematics have some operation which students must familiar early age all these is what they passed through in primary school level.
ii. It trains the mind to analyze mathematical concepts with a view to making the right contribution to day-to-day issues in our national lives.
iii. According to (AMOS S.A 2002) Analysis of problem, Mathematics helps develop the individual domain of learning with cognitive, affective and psychomotor.
Mathematics is an existing enjoyable and challenging study. To one who takes a bond view, mathematics is also an essential unity and simplicity to one who responds to mathematics. It presents a vast field to explore without boundaries. Mathematics aims the best formulation both as rewarding exercise in itself to provide a formulation on which the super structure of mathematics can be safety constructed (ALLEN, 2002).
Academic performance or achievement is the outcome of education or the extent to which a student teacher or institution has achieved their educational goals. Academic performance is commonly measure by examination or continuous assessment but there is no general agreement on how it is best tested or which aspects are most important (ALI SHOUTAT, ZUBAIR, FAHAD MUNIR, HAMID KHAN, AWAIS AHMED, 2013).
Students attend junior secondary school for grade seven through nine. At this point the majorities of students are at least 15years old and are no longer required to attend school. In the ninth grade students take the junior secondary school certificate examination (JSCE) to qualify for the limited number of openings in senior secondary schools those who do well in the examination may continue at the same institution or transfer to a different school if they qualify (TIMOTHY,1994).
1.3 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
High failure in mathematics in junior secondary school certificate examination (JSCE) in junior secondary school students is very rampant in secondary school which we have in Nigeria. There have been several arguments among students’ academic performances between JSCE mathematics and basic science which are very nervous and frightening and not easily passed.
This research is interested in finding answer to the problems centered on;
i. The relationship between academic performance of junior secondary school certificate examination in basic science and mathematics.
ii. Identifying any student whose performance is likely to lead to academic failure.
iii. Provide academic guidance so as to maximize the chances of success of all student in mathematic.
1.4 RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS
i. There is no significant relationship between the academic performance of basic science and mathematics student that sat for junior secondary school certificate examination.
ii. There is no significant difference between the academic performance of male and female student in basic science junior secondary school certificate examination.
iii. There is no significant difference between the academic performance of male and female student in mathematics junior secondary school certificate examination.
1.5 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The purpose of this research is to identify the relationship between the academic performances of junior secondary school certificate examination in basic science and mathematics. The relationship between the academic performances could help to resolve the high failure of students in mathematics.
1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
If this research could be completed, it will be of immense benefit for students to design their own interdisciplinary course of study in science admission process which encourages students to develop their educational goals. It will also guide student in developing a wider perspective of scientific concepts which cross disciplinary boundaries. It will intend to develop a broad appreciation of the links between disciplines and their impact in society. This will improve students’ performances in mathematics. It will also encourage students to learn mathematics which can improve students’ performances in JSCE mathematics.
It will help the teachers in monitoring the aspect of using the appropriate teaching methods in teaching topics in mathematics so as to aid effective learning which will also make students pass in examinations.
It will sensitize the government in planning well organized curriculum according to level of student in other to enhance effective teaching and learning in mathematics.
1.7 LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
This study could not cover the entire state due to time factor and financial problems.
1.8 DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY
This study is restricted to Abeokuta South Junior Secondary School, Ogun State Nigeria. The study is also limited to one (1) school which is Egba Comprehensive High School, Asero Abeokuta Ogun State. It also covers JSS 3 students’ academic performances in the junior secondary certificate examination in the year 2012.
1.9 OPERATIONAL DEFINITION
PERFORMANCE: This means the action or process of carrying out or accomplishing an action, task or function.
JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL: This is a phase of education in state secondary schools for years 7, 8, and 9 which helps to ensure the bridge between primary and secondary school is safe, strong and consistent for all students.
BASIC SCIENCE: This is one of the compulsory subject offered by pupils in schools from basic one (1) primary schools to basic nine(9)junior secondary schools.
EXAMINATION: this is an assessment intended to measure a test takers Knowledge, skill, aptitude, physical fitness, or classification in many other topics.
