RESEARCH BODY

ABSTRACT

This work is aimed at design and implementation of Airline Reservation System. The current system of airline reservation is faced with few technical issues, ranging from not allowing passengers to cancel their reservations as well as does not provide functionality for passengers to view price chart. This calls for the need to develop a system that corrects this error. The design Computerized Airline Reservation System stores and retrieves information and conduct transactions related to air travels.  The present system allows the passenger to cancel his/her reservation, if any problem occurs and view price chat which did not occur in the old system. This system allows the airline passengers to search for flights that are available between the two travel cities, namely the “Departure city” and “Destination city” for a particular departure and arrival dates. The methodology adopted for this project is the Structured System Analysis and Design Methodology (SSADM). The new system displays all the flight’s details such as flight number, name, price and duration of journey etc. After search the system display list of available flights and allows customer to choose a particular flight. Then the system checks for the availability of seats on the flight. If the seats are available then the system allows the passenger to book a seat. To book a flight the system asks the customer to enter his details such as name, address, city, state, and credit card number and contact number. Then it checks the validity of card and book the flight.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1     BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Online Air Ticketing is a kind of user assistance where customers can book tickets for flight online. This is an easy method which saves a lot of time. Airline Reservation Systems were first introduced in the late 1950s as relatively simple standalone systems to control flight inventory, maintain flight schedules, seat assignments and aircraft loading. The modern Airline Reservation System is comprehensive suite of products to provide a system that assists with a variety of airline management tasks and service customer needs from the time of initial reservation through completion of the flight.  One of the most common modes of travel is traveling by air. Customers who wish to travel by air nowadays have a wide variety of airlines, and a range of timings to choose from. Nowadays competition is so fierce between airlines that there are lot of discounts and a lot of luxuries given to customers that will give an edge to that particular airline. The World Wide Web has become tremendously popular over the last four years, and currently most of the airlines have made provision for online reservation of their flights. The Internet has become a major resource for people looking for making reservations online without the hassle of meeting travel agents (Wikipedia, 2010.)

Reservation is the written record or promise of an arrangement by which accommodations are secured in advance (WordWeb 5.1, WordNet Database.)

Airline Reservation Systems (ARS) used to be standalone systems. Each airline had its ownsystem, disconnected from other airlines or ticket agents, and usable only by a designatednumber of airline employees. Travel agents in the 1970s pushed for access to the airlines’systems. Today, air travel information is linked, stored, and retrieved by a network ofComputer Reservations Systems (CRS), accessible by multiple airlines and travel agents. Theglobal distribution system (GDS) makes for an even larger web of airline information, notonly merging the buying and selling of tickets for multiple airlines, but also making thesystems accessible to consumers directly. GDS portals and gateways on the Web allowconsumers to purchase tickets directly, select seats, and even book hotels and cars rental (Winston, Clifford 1995.)

1.2     STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The existing aero airline reservation system has the following shortcomings associated with it.

§  Customers are not able to make cancellations after making reservation in an event were they are not able to travel again.

§  The aero airline sites do not allow customers to view price chart.

1.3     OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The objective of this study is to develop software that will:-

·        Provide an option that will enable a passenger(s) to cancel his/her flight due to whim or impulse.

·        Provide an option where passengers can view price chart.

1.4     SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This project is narrowed down to local flights only. It does not make provision for International flights. This system is unable to support huge international flights for all countries.

1.5     SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This project work is so significance in the sense that:-

·        It reduces influx of passengers going to aero booking office to make manual booking.

·        It reduces the amount of carbon dioxide spewing to the environment as much as atmosphere.

·        It decongests road traffic.

1.6     LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

In the course of writing this seminar, they were some limitations, they include:

·        Time constraints

·        Financial constraints

·        Lack of materials.

1.7     DEFINITION OF TERMS

During the course of writing this seminar work, some words that need explanation are as follows:

§  ARS – Airline Reservation System

§  GDS – Global Distribution Systems

§  Flight – This refers to a one-way trip made by an aircraft from a particular destination at a particular time on a particular weekday.

§  FlightNumber – This uniquely identifies a flight.

§  Administrator – Refers to an authorized official of the airline who has the authority to change and update the databases of the ARS.

§  Reservation – The written record or promise of an arrangement by which accommodations are secured in advance. (WordWeb 5.1, WordNet Database).

§  System – This is any collection of component elements that work together to perform atask.

§  Module –One of a set of separate parts which, when combined, form a complete whole.
