INTRODUCTION

1.1       BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The need for electricity in the modern society especially in the operation of all its activities is highly becoming insatiable by the public power supply system of Nigeria.In this our contemporary world, almost every activity makes use of electrical and electronic device, whether it is general household use or specialized industrial use. The operation of these devices requires continuous supply of electrical power, to enhance the efficient delivery of power to these devices.This supply should not experience spikes, sags, noise etc., otherwise it will damage the device

In developed countries, the power supply is of good quality and is highly reliable without any of the problems highlighted above. But in developing countries like Nigeria, there appear to be a lot of problems associated with provision of power supply by electricity companies including power cuts and line problems. Power problems such as cuts and bridging of power lines are experienced more during the dry season, and in the raining season, thunderstorm, to mention a few,  which makes electrical devices and power lines to be damaged. This kind of situation necessitates an uninterruptible and alternative source of power supply.

However, for those needing an AC or without an option to DC power supply, a device such as a power inverter is used. A generator may also be used, but it has inherent disadvantages of noise, interrupted power supply, petrol, diesel or kerosene needed which makes them less efficient. A power inverter is a device that converts the DC supply of the battery (source) into A.C. power supply required by most of the electrical and electronic devices.

An inverter typically contains an inverter circuit which takes power supply from the battery converting its D.C. to A.C., a charger circuit which keeps the battery charged, oscillator, buffer amplifier, charger controller, MOSFET circuit, automatic change-over, transformer and solar panel . However , this will be expatiated in the course of this project.

1.2       PROBLEM STATEMENT

            Electricity has not been stable in developing countries, particularly in Nigeria and this called for serious and urgent supplementary means of power source that is more reliable and efficient.

Other means of power supply have been bulky in the provision of electricity. There must be another way round of suppressing it so as to be handy and less expensive.

1.3       AIM AND OBJECTIVES

1.3.1            AIM

The aim of this project is to design and construct a 2500VA inverter that is capable of generation of Alternating current power supply using Direct current power source.

1.3.2            OBJECTIVES

The objective of this project includes:

(i)         To design an inverter to deliver 2500VA of power output, a voltage of 230V and a frequency of 50Hz

(ii)      To design an automatic battery charger to recharge the battery from the mains power supply.

(iii)       To construct the design of 2.5kVA solar powered inverter to determine its performance.

1.4       SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY

This project is carried out to overcome the problem of irregular power supply in developing countries by providing an alternative source of power that is more reliable and efficient.

In contrast to other sources of energy, this study provides a means of energy that is less bulky, easier to maintain, less expensive and more efficient.

1.5       SCOPE OF STUDY

A solar powered inverter is applicable in different areas. However, the scope of this study will be restricted to the design and construction of a 2500VA power supply for domestic use. The design and construction is also limited to meet the specification of use in Nigeria only.
