ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to find out and highlight the impact of transportation on economic development of Odeda Local Government Area as a case study. This study is significant because it is a bold attempt at putting on record what constitutes specific and general problems associated with transportation system. It is also significant because it makes meaningful contributions to research by explaining why people using transportation, and at the same time, attempting to give solution to the problems associated with this system. The descriptive research design is use people from different villages in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State serve as research population. The major instrument use is the questionnaire, it is use for obtain information concerning the transportation system in Nigeria and impact on economic development in Odeda Local Government Area. The researcher hopes to accomplish this task through the following ways: (i) Highlight the impact of transportation system on the people of Odeda Local Government Area. (ii) Finding out why did the transportation break out without being avoided? (iii) Finding out how were the people able to survive the difficult of transportation? (iv) Finding out the effects of transportation on the people of Odeda Local Government. (v) The situation of life of the people of this area, both before and after the invention of transportation. (vi) Give possible suggestions on how such problems could be avoided in future. CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY The history of transportation is one of successive revolutions that have continually transformed the mobility of people and goods. These revolutions have shaped much of human history and determined the nature and location of human settlements and economies. Take the ancient Egyptians for example, it was their ability to build feluccas sailing boat for use on the river Nile, that allowed them to transport the granite and other materials used to construct their magnificent temple. In more recent times, there has been a revolutionary move away from walking our natural form of motion to modern forms of transportation such as the motor car, or the aeroplane. And yet, despite incredible progress in transportation, people in many parts of the world continue to depend on forms of mobility that have changed little for thousands of years. In Kenya, for instance, donkeys are still widely used to move goods between farmers’ field and the markets. Similarly, camels trains still remain a vital form of transportation in desert regions such as those North Africa. In the early twenty-first century, it might seem that we live in a world full of transportation. However, in reality, those options are not equally available to all. The availability and use of transportation is closely related to levels of economic development. One way of look at this relationship is to consider the number of cars per person in different regions or countries. In the wealth nations of North America, Western Europe and Japan, for example, there is today one car for every two or three people. In poorer countries, such as India and China, there is only around one car for every 250 people. Similar inequalities in transportation can be seen in other sectors too, such as railways. For example, the United Kingdom has a railway network almost five times bigger than that of Nigeria, even though the United Kingdom is only about a quarter of Nigeria’s area, and has a population that less than half the size of Nigeria’s 1.2 THE STATEMENT OF THE STUDY Following the stated background to this study, there is need to raise a specific problem which: what is the relationship between transportation and economy development in Nigeria? Based on the stated problem, the following research questions are examined in this study: i. Is transportation is important to man? ii. Is there any different between modern transportation and ancient transportation? iii. Is transportation helps for the development of Nigeria economy? 1.3 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY The purpose of this research work is to assess the impact of transportation system of Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State. This research study will, thereafter be carried out to determined whether there is any relationship between transportation and economy in Odeda Local Government. 1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS The research questions designed to examine the following problems as regard the topic or the research work. (i) What is transportation? (ii) What are the factors affecting transportation system in Nigeria? (iii) What are the attitudes of Odeda people toward transportation system? (iv) What are the impact of transportation on the life of Odeda people? (v) What are the social economic problems of transportation? (vi) What are the possible solutions to the problems of transportation system in the society? 1.5 DELIMITATION This project or research is delimited to Odeda Local Government Area, only in Ogun State. This includes the following towns: Asero, Obantoko, Osiele, Ilugun and Camp. Also, the research is delimited only to the impact of transportation system in this local government area. Therefore, the research only deals with the impact of transportation system in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State. 1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY This study which based on the transportation system is significant for a number of reasons. It is a bold attempt at putting on record, what constitutes specific and impact of transportation system. This study is also significant because it make meaningful contributions to research by explaining why people using modern transportation system. 1.7 DEFINITION OF TERMS ANCIENT: Belonging to a period of history that is thousands of years in the past.
