GENERAL INTRODUCTION

1.1  Background to the Study

According to Jindal and Syal (2010), in studying language which is the subject-matter of linguistics, we mark or sub-divide the area in order to study it in an analytical and systematic way. Alo (2004) expounds this thesis inter alia:

Language is a complex phenomenon and to be

Studied effectively, it is broken into major levels

Or areas. Within modern descriptive linguistics,

Language is studied from the following angles:

Phonetics, phonology, grammar (comprising

morphology and syntax), lexis and semantics.

Instructively, stylistics (which is the study of linguistic style) focuses on all the constitutive layers or dimensions of language use, which are deployed by language users in distinctive ways to transmit textual messages and achieve aesthetic effects, The effect of any text is to a very large extent determined by style. Alo (2004) opines that the descriptive study of style accounts for language use in texts from three distinct perspectives, in terms of focus and methodology viz: style as deviation-literary use of  language (i.e. from linguistic norms or conventions), recurrence-persuasive use of language (i.e. of language patterns- lexical, phonological, syntactic, etc), and textual function- practical use of language (i.e. variations in sentence structure found in texts and their functions as elements of emphasis, focus and foregrounding), through the following constituent levels of language study:

•         Phonology (sounds/sound effects)

•         Lexis (word usage and diction)

•         Grammar (word and sentence structure)

•         Semantics (units of meaning)

•         Graphology (Orthography or writing system)

•         Pragmatics (Language of action or getting things done)

Fundamentally, a writer taps from and exploits the vast resources of language for his imaginative creations. Lexical items help the writer to crystallize his thoughts, express certain emotions and create images all of which give   literature its peculiar expressive beauty. In this regard, writers depend on lexical items and their connotative implications to convey their intended messages. Therefore, the writer must choose the appropriate words to effectively convey the intended message and also to achieve aesthetic beauty. This is clearly inevitable from the praxis that a writer must use linguistic resources imaginatively to have the desired effect on the reader or audience .Ferdinand de Saussure’s distinction between ‘langue’ and ‘parole’ is particularly relevant here, in the sense that, while langue refers to the abstract signifying system of a given speech community which precludes a specific user’s application in a concrete context, parole means the particular uses of this system that speakers and writers make on this or that occasion (Leech and Short, 1981). Wales (2001) adds that a language user is free to select features from available resources of language at his/her disposal and the choice is partly conditioned by the demands of genre, form or theme (of discourse) (Alabi, 2008). This thesis explains why writers make lexical choices with great care to achieve the delicate target of conveying the intended meaning in a given context in the best possible way either persuasive, literary or practical.

Literary analysis is, quite simply, the process of breaking literary details down into smaller parts. A piece of work can include poetry, novels, dramatic works, short stories, memoir and personal essays. Close literary analysis requires a deep attention to the author’s use of diction (word choice), syntax (sentence structure) A writer can deviate from language norms by using figures of speech  like  metaphor, simile, symbolism, imagery e.t.c In literary analysis the image of a red rose might symbolize romance, while the image of red blood generally symbolizes danger.

Language can also be used for persuasion; persuasion is a writing or speech that tries to get listeners or readers to do something, Its purpose is to influence what the reader thinks or does, One comes across persuasion everyday, A friend tries to coax you to lend him your bicycle, An advertisement tries to get you to buy a certain pair of jeans, A brochure encourages you to take a trip to Paris. A writer or speaker has a viewpoint or opinion that they want their reader or listener to believe. And for this purpose they choose their words carefully to create the exact impression they intend, They use supporting details ,reasons, examples, facts to convince the reader that this view point is correct, The more details the writer uses, the more likely the reader will be persuaded, They encourage the reader to agree by stirring up emotions.

The Inspirational book Multiply your success – lead by Sam Adeyemi falls under the persuasive use of language, He uses language, carefully selecting his words which convinces his reader to work towards been successful.

1.2  Statement of Research Problem

Studies on persuasive uses of language generally focus on such discourse genres as advertising, political campaigns, face-to-face marketing talks, and advocacy to mention but a few. Persuasive uses of language in inspirational books have not been given adequate attention. In particular, the inspirational writings of Pastor Sam Adeyemi have not been given any critical attention (to the best of our knowledge) in linguistic research. Studying Sam Adeyemi’s inspirational books will contribute to the knowledge of inspirational texts generally and Sam Adeyemi’s persuasive strategies in particular. This study, therefore, aims at filling this gap.

1.3      Objectives of the Study

The aim of this study is to account for the form and content of Sam Adeyemi’s revolutionary book, Multiply Your Success – Lead.  The specific objectives are to:

•          identify and analyze the lexical characteristics of Sam Adeyemi revolutionary book, Multiply Your Success – Lead.

•         identify and analyze the layers of meaning in the text in relation to the identified lexico-semantic features; and

•         relate the linguistic features of the book to the larger context of human needs

1.4.      Research Questions

1.      What are the lexical features that exist in Sam Adeyemi revolutionary book “Multiply Your Success – Lead”?

2.      What is the semantic pattern observed in Sam Adeyemi revolutionary book “Multiply Your Success – Lead”?

3.    How does the book target the needs of the people in terms of language and content?

1.5       Significance of the Study

This study would be a useful addition to studies on inspirational discourse and persuasive uses of language. It would also elucidate the notion of Christian inspirational rhetoric in Nigeria. The study would further contribute to knowledge of Sam Adeyemi’s personal uses of language.

1.6       Scope and Limitation

This research work will be restricted only to the lexico-semantic structure of the language used in Sam Adeyemi inspirational book. The grammatical features of the text will not be studied. Also the text’s graphology and phonological characteristics are not the objects of the present study. By concentrating on the lexico-semantic features of the text alone, this study will shed lights on meaning making strategies employed by the author and will analyze these strategies comprehensively.
