ABSTRACT It is obvious that the study of Egungun festival is almost entirely the study of an organisation of Yoruba people. This research project is written basically to give a descriptive analysis of the role of art craft in Yoruba festival songs and chants in Ijebu South Local Government Area of Ogun State CHAPTER ONE 1.1 INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY In many parts of Yoruba land, a creative response has been given to death of ancestors which is commemorated by egungun festivals which are performed during the annual remembrance or burial ceremonies as well as during specific funeral rites through out the Years. The masquerade outing is a multi-faceted ceremony which involves the making of scarifies and giving of offerings in honour of ancestors for past and future aids. The festivals in Yoruba traditional societies were products or moral and spiritual insight and experiences. The festival lasted between seven and fifteen days. And during these time eating, winning, dancing and singing are the order of the day. Beating of drums and other musical instruments rises to climate intensity in the market square with each family unit trying to out do all others. Festivals such as Egungun festival and Oro festival provides the opportunity for interaction and relaxation. Elaborate performance seeks to commemorate the dead through the remembrance of their past life while simultaneously reinforcing the relationship between the living and recently deceased ancestor. 1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM It was discovered that some sons and daughters of Ijebu south local government do not recognized the role of art used in their community and their music is not documented the future purpose. More so, they don’t want most of their works to go outside their community except if you are one of them. 1.3 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY 1. The purpose of these project work is to document the music of the Ijebu people so as to maintain a strong Yoruba cultural influence in their music without the infusion of modern beats. 2. To go back to the roots to remind us how strong our culture was and how it should be. 3. To understand the symbolic tunes played by the talking drums. 4. To make the people of Ijebu south recognize and be able to sing the songs used for Egungun festival in their communities. 5.
