ABSTRACT This study is to consider and examine the study of performance of 100l N.C.E student of ISC/Biology and ISC/Chemistry on physical related courses. Finally, the project recommended that there is no significant difference between the performance of Biology and Chemistry Integrated science student and there is no variation between the performance of Biology and Chemistry Integrated Science. Student and Gender. CHAPTER ONE 1.0 INTRODUCTION 1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY In this more advance transformation, information and technology era, one of the lesson considered important as the basic for knowledge and technology acquisition is integrated science/Biology (ISC/BIOLOGY), (Checkley, 2010). This quite makes sense, because ISC/Biology is part of science (Ben, 2010), where science has direct effects and relation to various life fields and also jobs based on information and technology (Ukoh, 2012). Further, (Awodun, 2013) state that almost every life field have relation with ISC/Biology like organism or inanimate, form Engineering to Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry. According to (Mekonnenet’ al, 2014) without ISC/Biology Science knowledge, human will face difficulties in exploring the universe, further more (Elwan et al, 2013) state that the understanding of ISC/Biology helps to understand the content of universe and for student, it helps to develop the observation skill, accuracy, analysis ability, creative thinking and ISC/Biology Science acquisition which is now very required and cannot be avoided by student (Ukoh, 2012). Nevertheless, the student result study of ISC/Biology is still low in all levels (Ukoh, 2012, Ganina, 2009 and Mekonnen, 2014). The low student study result of ISC/Biology is caused by many factors such as intern and extern factors for the student (Carbone et al, 2009). The intern factors may be attitude, motivation, interest, knowledge, skills, hope, assumption and goal (Wulan sari, 2012) whole the extern factor is the student study environment condition (Redish, 2005), like the utilization of teaching method by the teachers (Changeiywo, 2011) family environment and the availability o0f learning facility and infrastructure (Iliya, 2013) One of the intern factors affecting the study achievement is student interest to the material taught. As mentioned in (Djamarah, 2002). Teaching learning strategy, if a student has high study interest, the study result to be high in contract if the interest is less, the study result will be low. The low of student result study in ISC/Biology so far is also caused by ISC/Biology is considered as a difficult lesson for the student, especially if the material is related to integrated science/chemistry (Felder, 2005). On the other side, the ISC/Biology comprehension need knowledge ISC/Chemistry concept. According to (Olusola, 2012) and (Meltizer, 2002) there is positive correlation between ISC/Chemistry and the success in ISC/chemistry acquisition and ISC/Biology study result is reported by many researchers. As reported in Application of multivariate by (Ghozali, 2001) pone cause of student difficulty in studying ISC/Biology is the ISC/Chemistry inadequatequality. Also (Wanhar, 2008) reports that there is a linear relation between the comprehension of ISC/chemistry concept and the ability to solve ISC/Biology problem, while ISC/Chemistry ability has effects to student achievement of ISC/Biology study. Learning ISC/Biology is also relative with the ability to solve problem. According to (Surpardi, 2012) problem solving has important roles in ISC/Biology learning. Further, it is stated that problem solving aims at developing the transformation skill including problems observation, proposing questions, formulation hypothesis planning examination, conducting examination, analysis and data interpretation and communicating the results. On the other side, there is no research o know student interest at ISC/Biology and knowledge of student basic concept of ISC/Chemistry and its correlation to the ISC/Biology study result of Federal College of Education in Abeokuta. This is because so far, the research is conducted separately by ISC/Chemistry and ISC/Biology researchers without considering the importance of these two combinations, instead according to (Meltzer, 2002) students’ ISC/Biology ability is affected by student experience in studying ISC/Chemistry. This shows that comprehension of ISC/Biology requires ISC/Chemistry acquisition. Beside, although it is known and as an open secret that interest, as well as the knowledge of ISC/chemistry concept must be related to students’ ability to solve problems or student’ result study not only in ISC/Biology, but also other field, but this kind of research has not been ever conducted in Federal College of Education and however, to increase student study result of ISC/Biology, it is very necessary to require some factors affecting student study result like the interest in ISC/Biology and knowledge of ISC/Chemistry concept as the initial information for teacher to develop successful learning. 1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Current preaching by the National Commission for colleges of Education (NCCE) is emphasized on single major courses, while double major course is abandoned. This can be seen in the new NCCE 2008 Minimum standard that all subject should be single major (NCCE, 2008). This prompted the need to carry out a case study in the two ‘major’ where Federal College of Education Abeokuta were considered since no research of this, nature had been conducted in the selected study areas. It is generally believed that a sound knowledge of single science subject such as Integrated science/Biology and Integrated science/Chemistry, Integrated science and physics as a single science subject. Therefore, the study seeks to determine the relationship between the performance of 100level NCE students’ of ISC/Biology and ISC/Chemistry on physical related course. 1.3 RESEARCH QUESTION i. What are the associated problems related to the study of ISC/Biology and ISC/Chemistry? ii. What are the relationship between the performance of 100level N.C.E student’s in ISC/Biology and ISC/Chemistry? 1.4 RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS i. Ho1: There is no significant different between the performance of Biology and Chemistry students of Integrated Science combination in physical related course. ii. Ho2: There is no significant difference between the performance of male and female Integrated science (Biology and Chemistry) student in physical related course. 1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY Chemistry is one of the science subject upon which technological break-through is built and is the pivot on which the wheel of science rotates. ISC/Biology and ISC/Chemistry are very important and helpful in fields such as medicine, agriculture, transportation, housing, industries etc. It is the sincere hope of the correlational study of perform of 100L N.C.E students of ISC/Biology and ISC/Chemistry on physical relate course. The findings recommendations would be of a great help to all stakeholders who have anything to do with the success or failure of the child in school, classroom teacher, psychologists, administration theorist, curriculum designer and professional association. It will equally guide and guard government at all levels and ministries of education, school guidance counsellor and parents and improving the whole system in such a way as to induce better performance in educational level. It will also provide the necessary frame work for parent student and teachers to encourage towards to build self confidence in themselves at school and work. It gives the policy makers and administrators can insight of the kind of policy to adopt to achieve optimal academic benefit for the overall interest of the country. 1.6 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY The purpose of this study is to investigate the study of performance of 100level N.C.E student of ISC/Biology and ISC/Chemistry on physical related course. Based on this background, this research aims to know v The relationship between performance at ISC/Biology and ability to solve ISC/Biology v The relationship between knowledge of ISC/Chemistry concept and ability to solve ISC/Biology problems v The collective relationship between performance at ISC/Biology and knowledge of ISC/Chemistry concept and the ability to solve ISC/Biology problem for Federal College of Education in Abeokuta 1.7 LIMITATION OF THE STUDY This study is limited to some selected department in Federal College of Education Abeokuta. It is limited to department of ISC/Biology and ISC/Chemistry. 1.8 DEFINITION OF TERMS The following key word used in the study are hereby defined: PERFORMANCE: the act of performing; carrying into action execution, achievement, accomplishment, representation by action, as the performance of an undertaking of the duty.
